What colour underwear is actually invisible under light clothes
There's a piece of received wisdom that white underwear goes under white clothes. It's one of those rules that sounds obviously correct and isn't.
Why white fails
Your skin isn't white. So white underwear against your body creates a contrast boundary of its own, and through thin, light fabric that boundary reads as a shape — a distinct object rather than nothing. It's a smaller effect than black, but it's the same effect.
Why black fails harder
Black under pale fabric is maximum contrast, which makes it the most visible option available. It's visible from further away than most people realise, in ordinary daylight, and — this is the awkward part — nobody is ever going to mention it to you.
Black is genuinely the right answer under dark clothing. Under light clothing it's the worst one, and most drawers are full of it because most brands make it for black leggings.
The rule that works
Match your skin, not your outfit. A soft mid-tone close to your own colouring minimises the contrast at every edge, so there's nothing for the eye to catch. On most Australian skin tones that means a muted blue or a soft pink rather than a stark white or a true nude that's a shade off.
- Powder Blue — a cool mid-tone; disappears under pale blue scrubs, white trousers and light denim
- Pastel Pink — warmer; the better pick on warmer skin tones
- Midnight Blue — for darker outfits, where black would also be fine
- Classic Black — dark clothing only
Colour is only half of it
Colour solves the show-through. It does nothing about the line. Elastic leg openings and stitched seams press a visible ridge through tight or thin fabric regardless of colour, which is a separate problem with a separate fix: bonded edges, or a cut with no rear coverage to crease. Where this actually matters
It's always the garment below the waist. A shirt or a top can't reveal underwear — there's nothing there to reveal.
