What to wear under linen (without the daylight surprise)

Linen behaves differently to almost everything else in a summer wardrobe, and the reason is structural rather than about quality.

The weave is the whole story

Linen is a loose, open weave. That's not a flaw — it's the entire point. The gaps between the threads are what let air move and what make linen the coolest thing you can wear in an Australian summer.

The same gaps let light through. A dense cotton twill blocks it; an open linen weave doesn't. So a pair of linen trousers that are completely opaque in your bedroom can be considerably less so at midday with the sun behind you.

Why you don't notice until you're out

Because almost everyone checks facing the light. You stand at the mirror with the window in front of you, and that's the single angle that won't reveal it. Backlighting is the condition that matters, and bedrooms usually have one window while outdoors has an entire sky.

The two-second check: stand with the window behind you and look over your shoulder in the mirror. If there's an outline indoors, there will be a clearer one outside.

What to wear underneath

Linen is usually natural, oatmeal, white or a soft pastel, so the contrast maths is the same as any pale fabric: black is the most visible option, white still registers as a shape, and a mid-tone close to your skin is what actually disappears.

The other half is the edge. Linen drapes rather than clinging, so it's less prone to VPL than leggings — but a stitched seam or elastic leg opening will still catch the light through an open weave. Bonded edges leave nothing to catch.
