What to wear under scrubs (that doesn't show through)

Scrubs are thinner than most people expect, and pale blue is the most common colour in Australian hospitals and clinics. New, straight out of the packet, under overhead lighting, you can see more through them than anyone tells you.

The important thing to be clear about: it's the trousers, not the top. Underwear can't show through a scrub top — there's nothing there to show. Everything below is where the problem lives, and that's true of every pale uniform: scrub trousers, stone chinos, white work trousers, light-coloured tunics worn long.

Why black is the wrong instinct

Most of us reach for black, on the theory that dark equals discreet. Under pale fabric it's the opposite — black is maximum contrast, so it's the single most visible option. It reads as a distinct shape rather than as nothing.

White is the other instinct, and it doesn't work either, for a subtler reason. White underwear sits on top of your skin tone rather than blending into it, so it still registers as a separate object through thin fabric.

What actually disappears

The rule is to match your skin, not your uniform. A soft mid-tone reads as nothing because there's minimal contrast at the boundary.

  • Powder Blue — disappears under pale blue and teal scrubs on most skin tones
  • Pastel Pink — the better option on warmer skin tones
  • Black — shows under any overhead light, which is all clinical lighting
  • White — reads as a shape rather than as nothing

The seam matters as much as the colour

Colour solves visibility; construction solves the line. Elastic leg openings and a stitched back seam press a visible edge through thin trousers no matter what colour they are. Bonded (laser-cut) edges leave nothing to print through, which is why seamless underwear is the reliable answer under any pale uniform.

Then there's hour eleven

Visibility is the morning problem. The afternoon problem is different: a seam that was fine at eight is still there at seven, a waistband makes itself known somewhere around the middle of a double, and all-cotton underwear that absorbed the heat of a ward three hours ago hasn't let go of it.

A performance knit moves moisture outward instead of holding it, and a cotton-lined gusset keeps a natural, breathable layer in the one place it matters. See cotton vs synthetic underwear for the longer version.

The honest bit. Nothing you wear stops you sweating, and any brand promising that is overselling. What underwear can change is what happens to the moisture afterwards — whether it sits against you or moves away. Dry is the thing worth asking for. We go into it properly in does sweat-proof underwear actually work.

The Anywhere G is a seamless G-string with a performance nylon body, a cotton-lined gusset, bonded edges and no waistband. $32 a pair, or from $21.90 a pair in multipacks.

Frequently asked

What colour underwear should I wear under light blue scrubs?

A soft mid-tone close to your own skin disappears best. Powder Blue works under pale blue and teal scrubs on most skin tones, and Pastel Pink suits warmer tones. Black is the one to avoid — it's the highest contrast against pale fabric, so it shows under overhead lighting.

Do scrubs show underwear?

Light-coloured scrub trousers can, especially when they're new, thin, or lit from above — which is most clinical lighting. It's the trousers doing it, not the top. Seamless underwear in a mid-tone removes both the colour contrast and the seam line.

What's the best underwear for a 12-hour nursing shift?

Seamless, with a cotton-lined gusset and no elastic waistband. Over a long shift the waistband and leg elastic are what start to dig, and absorbent cotton holds moisture against you for hours after you've warmed up.

What you’ll notice on day one

Three things customers tell us within the first wear.

It stays put

The waist sits flat where you put it. The leg openings don't shift through the day.

It's invisible

No lines through white pants, no bumps under a dress, no bunching anywhere.

It stays dry

Pilates, a hot day, a long flight — recycled performance fabric wicks moisture without holding it.

Training thongs: the G-string built for the gym

Short answer: a training thong is a G-string built for the gym, not for looks. The whole point is a seamless, moisture-wicking pair that stays put through a workout, does not show under leggings, a...
