What actually stops thong chafing at the gym
Chafing gets blamed on sweat, but sweat is mostly the accomplice. The actual culprits are friction points - seams, edges and damp fabric rubbing the same patch of skin through a few hundred reps. Fix the friction points and the sweat stops mattering.
Where gym chafe actually comes from
- Seam placement. A stitched seam sitting on the leg crease or inner thigh is a tiny file. Low-load, it's nothing. Add repetition - a run, a spin class, walking lunges - and it becomes a hotspot by the cool-down.
- Damp fabric. Wet fabric grips skin instead of gliding over it, which multiplies friction exactly where you don't want it. This is cotton's problem: it absorbs and holds. A wicking synthetic moves moisture off the skin and keeps gliding.
- Loose fabric. Anything that bunches creates a fold, and folds rub. This is why the fix for chafing is never "wear something baggier underneath".

What works by workout
Running and HIIT - the high-repetition offenders. You want minimal fabric, bonded edges, wicking body. This is where a well-built thong beats a full brief-style pair outright: less fabric, fewer edges, nothing to bunch.

The honest bit
